travel tuesday: the surrey

President's weekend was ideal for a quick getaway to New York with the family. Intent on museum-mongering, I chose The Surrey (20 E. 76th St, New York) as home base. How could I resist a hotel where the rooms are "salons"?

What a lovely hotel! The superior staff and service from the moment we arrived truly made an impression. The lobby is welcoming with an impression of warmth, even though all the décor colors are cool gray neutrals. Layers of pattern and texture add interest to every area of the hotel.

Swoon! An eccentric cabinet from the UK's Jimmie Martin:

The Duxiana bed is dressed in Sferra sheets. I had to drag myself away from this luxurious haven each morning. And seriously, whenever I sat on the bed, I had to pet the sheets. Could. Not. Stop.

Like the lobby, the room is bedecked in neutrals from charcoal through taupe all the way to white. A mix of finishes and textures create a soothingly seamless environment that is never boring. Exactly what I love in hotel!

The bathroom is exquisite. Cool in Carrera, with Art Deco touches, it is perfectly sized and appointed. The mosaic floor is beautifully done. Only quibble here — a second bar of soap for the shower would have been welcomed (really not a bath issue, more a housekeeping one.)

Yes, I have heaped a lot of superlatives on the Hotel Surrey. It deserves a nearly 5-star rating. The biggest downside to this hotel is the street noise. Our room faced 76th Street (as opposed to Madison Avenue), in theory the quieter side of the hotel. Truly, the hotel would benefit from double-glazed windows to cut the traffic noise.

Café Boulud is adjacent to the hotel. All I can say is amazing food in tiny portions, with seriously slow room service.

All told, a nearly 5-star experience I look forward to enjoying again and would recommend without reservation.
