fabric friday: new from villanova

Last week I had the chance to see many new fab­ric offer­ings at DesignSourceCT's Spring Tex­tile Show. One delight­ful stand­out is the new col­lec­tion from Romo — specif­i­cally from the Vil­laNova brand. It's no secret I like lush col­ors and Romo always offers intense col­ors sel­dom scene these beige days. Throw in a gor­geous hand and some lux embroi­dered silk, and I am one happy designer!

The Clarence col­lec­tion of vel­vets, amaz­ing to the touch:

fabric friday: robert kuo for s. harris

This lovely col­lec­tion by Robert Kuo for S. Har­ris is, I think, decep­tively sub­tle. The designer has trans­lated from his usual mate­ri­als of metal and wood, mar­ried his her­itage of ancient Chi­nese pat­tern and crafted some­thing com­pletely new. Serene but com­plex, these fab­rics delight the eye and the hand. In sev­eral not-quite-neutral col­ors, with a few rich reds thrown into the mix, here is a sampling:

fabric friday: australian botanicals outdoor collection from mokum

Here is another exam­ple of sus­tain­able design in the world of fab­rics! From Aus­tralian com­pany Mokum, the Aus­tralian Botan­i­cals Out­door col­lec­tion is con­structed entirely from post-industrial waste fibers using an envi­ron­men­tally friendly pro­duc­tion process. These fab­rics are them­selves fully recy­clable and  Cradle-to-Cradle Sil­ver Cer­ti­fied.

Just a few sam­ples shown here, but other excit­ing col­ors are avail­able. The col­lec­tion, includ­ing graphic pat­terns, stripes and coör­di­nat­ing solids, is for indoor and out­door use. What a fun chance to extend your green dec­o­rat­ing phi­los­o­phy to your out­door space!

As clients become more open to embrac­ing sus­tain­able design alter­na­tives, it helps when those alter­na­tives are aes­thet­i­cally appeal­ing even with­out their green story. Bravo to Mokum for this lovely collection!

fabric friday: nina campbell for osborne & little

I love a col­lec­tion with a story, espe­cially if there is a lit­er­ary inspi­ra­tion behind the design. Nina Campbell's Par­adiso col­lec­tion for Osborne & Lit­tle ref­er­ences Dante Alighieri's poetry (1265–1321) and Renais­sance Flo­rence. A fresh take on tra­di­tional is always…refreshing!

This scrolling pais­ley is named for Beat­rice, whom Dante met as a child of ten and remained entranced with for the rest of his life.

Again ref­er­enc­ing Beat­rice, this embroi­dered damask on linen is named for her home Porti­nari. Her char­ac­ter served as Dante's guide in the last book of The Divine Comedy.

This opu­lent pat­tern is aptly named Par­adiso, after the final book. With a ver­ti­cal repeat of 30", it would be divine for drapery.

The Par­adiso col­lec­tion includes mul­ti­ple col­or­ways in the pat­terns shown, as well as a selec­tion of weaves and coör­di­nat­ing wall­pa­pers. Shown below, 'Rosa Alba' as fab­ric and wallpaper.
